Augmented Reality (AR) is an environment that augments the world around us in real time. It is created by projecting digital information (text, images, graphics, video) onto the screen of various devices. This adds artificial elements and new information to the real world. This is done using devices such as tablets or smartphones. Of course, software is also required.
Specialists from Filio Force Inc. talked about the development and application of AR technologies.
Augmented reality must be distinguished from virtual reality. VR technology is a specially designed digital environment that replaces the real world. AR technology is the projection of virtual (digital) objects onto the real world. VR blocks out the real world and immerses the user in a digital universe, while AR embeds elements of the digital world into the real world.
With augmented reality, we do not see the world directly, but through a filter. It embeds virtual objects into the real environment as if they were actually there. The real world does not disappear, it is just augmented.
Like VR, AR is used in many areas. But Augmented Reality has one advantage – the ability to show a model at a 1:1 scale. The user can compare the model with objects around them and judge the scale visually, not speculatively.
The way augmented reality is created in all cases is as follows:
Devices on which AR technology can be used
AR technologies are being used in many areas of business and human activity. Here are some examples that Filio Force development specialists are working with.
Education. Pupils and students can read AR books with 3D stories that “come to life”, see how a combustion engine works, observe the respiratory, nervous and digestive systems of animals, etc.
Tourism. Create “come to life” travel guides, brochures, booklets, etc. Ability to immerse clients in places and attractions that are physically inaccessible to the average tourist. Pre-visualisation of tours with the possibility of obtaining more information. Preliminary virtual tour of the hotel area, the possibility to feel its atmosphere, to see the details of the holiday in advance.
Medicine. The use of AR in medicine allows doctors to get detailed information about the patient’s condition in real time. Surgeons are using AR technologies to navigate during complex operations, reducing surgery time by 20% and reducing the risk of complications.
Marketing. Disney brand awareness through AR technology. In Singapore, a digital billboard and street-facing camera were installed next to a bus stop. When someone appeared nearby, virtual characters – Disney cartoon characters – came to life, greeting people, dancing or otherwise interacting with them.
Retail. AR technologies allow consumers to ‘try on’ products without leaving their homes. Customers can visualise and evaluate goods before they buy. This helps businesses increase sales and reduce returns by 20-30%.
Any smartphone or tablet can be used as an AR platform to create a shopping environment, whether in a traditional or online store. AR technology has been adopted by IKEA. Using an app, shoppers can see how a piece of furniture will fit into a room. An online-only retailer can use AR technology to create a three-dimensional store that virtually replicates the experience of shopping in a traditional store.
Gaming. The gaming industry is one of the first to embrace VR/AR technology. There are currently many games that use virtual and augmented reality.
Construction. AR technology makes it possible to visualise a 3D model of a future building with all the details right at the proposed construction site, walk through virtual rooms and evaluate the final result of the construction with all the structural features.
Manufacturing. By 2025, ABI Research predicts that around 40% of industrial companies will use AR technologies to improve production processes. It can be used to provide detailed instructions to workers, increasing labour productivity by 30%. AR technology can also be used to quickly identify and fix technical faults in equipment.
At Filio Force Company you can order augmented reality by selecting the technology you need. Depending on the needs of your company, we will select the technology stack and implement the project. As a result, you will have an effective tool for combining the real and virtual worlds.
